Swim Instructor Jobs Can be Rewarding
A swim instructor’s job can be challenging at times, but it is also a very rewarding position. A child having some sort of personal success after leaving swim lessons is rewarding. You can become a good swim instructor if you are interested in teaching. At the very least, a good swim instructor likes to be around children and wants to become a role model for those participants. - Be at least 15 years old with a work permit
- Possess at least community CPR, AED, and first aid certification
- Have a mature and professional demeanor
- Genuinely like children.
Swim Instructor Training
With Jeff Ellis Management, all the swim instructor training is done in-house by a certified Program Coordinator designated for your facility. Swim instructors are given the task at swim instructor training to complete swimming pre-requisites. These pre-requisites consist of swimming 25 meters of freestyle with rhythmic breathing, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and butterfly. The Program Coordinator oversees all strokes during class. If a candidate cannot swim some of the strokes, they will still have an opportunity to become a swim instructor. The classes that can be taught will be reduced depending on what strokes the trainee is unable to swim. So, the swim strokes you can perform may affect what swim instructor jobs for which you can qualify. The minimum strokes you would have to achieve to become a swim instructor are freestyle and backstroke. If you can only swim those 2 strokes, you would only be certified through Parent+Preschool level. If you cannot complete all the swim strokes but decide to practice and want to upgrade your certification later, you can do that. A Program Coordinator will test you out on your pre-requisites again and upgrade your certification at that time.
Swim Instructor Certification
Once the swim instructor is certified in a child’s level, they will teach all the participants the different strokes and skills needed to pass that level. When a swim instructor has succeeded all the levels of teaching and has shown that they can speak to parents and participants and give great customer service, they have gone above and beyond for the participants in swim lessons. If a swim instructor has shown that they can take on more responsibility, they can transition into a Program Coordinator role.
